Is an all-out Russia-Ukraine war about to break out?

Russia and its CSTO ally Belarus have announced joint military exercises in February, which Western pundits claim are part of preparations for an invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kiev has been receiving new weapons from the UK, this week, with the shipments touted as boosting its ‘self-defense’. U.S. humanitarian partners have been providing emergency food, health, relief commodity, and shelter assistance to populations affected by heavy rains and flash floods in Afghanistan since June. On May 2, 2021, devastating floods affected several provinces across the country. In August 2021, just under 20 years after an American-led coalition ended Taliban rule in Afghanistan, a revitalised Taliban took Kabul. They are now better armed and control more territory than they did two decades ago.

The person claims they have suffered a serious injury in Afghanistan and needs assistance to return to the United States, or claims they need money to travel home to visit a sick relative. The U.S. government and military have systems in place to evacuate service members, diplomats, and contractors who are injured or need to visit families in the United States for emergencies. The most common scam we see involves calls, texts, or social media messages from a person claiming be a U.S. citizen stationed in Afghanistan as a member of the U.S. Blinken appeared moved by his visit to Ukraine as he railed against what he said were Russian war crimes and the price of “indiscriminate violence” inflicted on civilians.

After all those nightmares Afghans experienced, our belief of human being living in a lawless jungle where the loss of innocent lives didn’t matter at all proved wrong. Investigation of war crimes and swift effective sanctions would have taken place and fighting for freedom would have been a right, not terrorism, were Afghans blue-eyed and blond-haired or geographically located in a civilized part of the world. I have been precisely following the news of Russia-Ukraine war since it unfolded on February 24. The biased and racist reactions of the international civilized community to both invasions have left me bowled over.

"We also see urgent funding appeals for support to Ukraine, which absolutely needs that support, but Afghanistan's needs are no less." A week into Russia's invasion of Ukraine, international attention is shifting away from Afghans as they bear the brunt of decades of war, drought, and an economic collapse. On the northern border with Belarus, Ukrainian and Russian officials ended their first round of talks. And a rare emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly has heard a demand from the secretary general for an immediate halt to hostilities. President Vladimir Putin has banned Russians from moving money abroad as he tries to halt a plunge in the value of the rouble following the imposition of sanctions. Away from the battlefields, economic and diplomatic moves have continued.

Hameed Hakimi, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, is not optimistic about the situation. He says there is little hope for increased international attention to Afghanistan's growing humanitarian woes and that Western economies, reeling from the shock of the coronavirus pandemic, are tightening spending abroad. We express our full solidarity with our colleagues, friends and partners as well as their families in Ukraine.

Service provision across the country, increased prices of staple foods and fuel, reduced household purchasing power, and other developments that constrain the ability of Afghan households to meet basic needs.
